Microdermabrasion sounds too good to be true, a simple procedure that can make your skin look younger in a matter of minutes. There must be a catch, right?! Wrong!
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF MICRODERMABRASION?
There are virtually no risks associated with having microdermabrasion performed by a licensed and skilled esthetician. It’s a totally noninvasive procedure and it doesn’t use any harsh chemicals. It’s gentle enough that you could have it done during your lunch break. In fact, it only takes about 30 minutes, is not painful, and leaves skin immediately refreshed. At worst, you may have some minor redness and increased sensitivity for up to 24 hours. It is extremely important to use proper sun protection following microdermabrasion, as removing the outer layer leaves skin more susceptible to sun damage.
WHAT ABOUT AT HOME MICRODERMABRASION KITS?
Don’t waste your time or money on these. At home microdermabrasion is NOT the same as professional microdermabrasion.
Professional machines are far more powerful than at home machines and a skilled esthetician will remove way more dead, dry skin without causing damage. Also, like a teenager cutting her own bangs in front of a mirror, there’s no protection from taking a little too much off and causing long-term damage. Some things are best left to the pros.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MICRODERMABRASION?
The frequency of treatments varies depending on your skin type and specific needs; it is often between 2-8 weeks. Odds are you’ve heard of microdermabrasion. You’ve seen it in magazines and probably have at least one friend
who swears by it. But does it live up to the hype ? In this post, we’re going to talk about what microdermabrasion is
and who can benefit from it.
WHAT IS MICRODERMABRASION?
In a nutshell, it’s a supercharged exfoliation that removes the rough, thick superficial outermost
layers of skin. There are two types of microdermabrasion machines, crystal and diamond tip. Crystal
microdermabrasion machines use a wand that sprays a fine mist of aluminum oxide crystals and vacuums them
them up along with the dead skin. Diamond-tip microdermabrasion is newer and is just what it sounds
like. An esthetician passes a diamond tipped wand over your skin. This diamond tip sands off your outer layers
of skin and has suction to vacuum it all up.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM MICRODERMABRASION?
If you want instantly fresher, younger looking skin then microderm can help you. In particular, it can be useful for:
- reducing fine lines and minor wrinkles
- increased penetration of moisturizers and other skin care products
- improving uneven skin tone
- reducing dark spots
- improving melasma
- softening skin
