Brow shape matters because it helps to balance features, frame your face, make you look happier, and look younger.
Oval face: prominent cheekbones, forehead larger then cheeks tapering down to a narrow chin.
Round face: face widest at cheeks and face is as long as it is wide
Long face: jawline, cheekbones and forehead are all approximately the same width and face tapers to a narrow chin
Square face: jawline, cheekbones and forehead all about the same width and squared jawline is the most prominent feature
Heart face: is like the oval face except chin is more pointed
Diamond face: very angular face and is wider at the temples and forehead is short ( not common )
First discovered in Asia, threading is a ancient hair removal technique.
To remove the hair from the brows the client closes their eyes and stretches the skin around the brows so that the hair is pulled out without nicking the skin. The threader then uses a special type of thread and technique to create a small lasso like shape to pull the hairs out from their roots. No heat or chemicals are used. Threading is great for all skin types but especially sensitive skin. Proper hygiene practice before and after is important to avoid pimples and irritation. Threading is more precise (gets hairs just above the skin surface) and last longer then waxing. Other common areas for threading are the face and neck.

Microdermabrasion sounds too good to be true, a simple procedure that can make your skin look younger in a matter of minutes. There must be a catch, right?! Wrong!
WHAT ARE THE RISKS OF MICRODERMABRASION?
There are virtually no risks associated with having microdermabrasion performed by a licensed and skilled esthetician. It’s a totally noninvasive procedure and it doesn’t use any harsh chemicals. It’s gentle enough that you could have it done during your lunch break. In fact, it only takes about 30 minutes, is not painful, and leaves skin immediately refreshed. At worst, you may have some minor redness and increased sensitivity for up to 24 hours. It is extremely important to use proper sun protection following microdermabrasion, as removing the outer layer leaves skin more susceptible to sun damage.
WHAT ABOUT AT HOME MICRODERMABRASION KITS?
Don’t waste your time or money on these. At home microdermabrasion is NOT the same as professional microdermabrasion.
Professional machines are far more powerful than at home machines and a skilled esthetician will remove way more dead, dry skin without causing damage. Also, like a teenager cutting her own bangs in front of a mirror, there’s no protection from taking a little too much off and causing long-term damage. Some things are best left to the pros.
HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MICRODERMABRASION?
The frequency of treatments varies depending on your skin type and specific needs; it is often between 2-8 weeks. Kara, at Alluring Face Pdx, will help you determine the best course of action for your skin. Go to alluringfacepdx.com to schedule your first microdermabrasion session with Kara right away.

Odds are you’ve heard of microdermabrasion. You’ve seen it in magazines and probably have at least one friend
who swears by it. But does it live up to the hype ? In this post, we’re going to talk about what microdermabrasion is
and who can benefit from it.
WHAT IS MICRODERMABRASION?
In a nutshell, it’s a supercharged exfoliation that removes the rough, thick superficial outermost
layers of skin. There are two types of microdermabrasion machines, crystal and diamond tip. Crystal
microdermabrasion machines use a wand that sprays a fine mist of aluminum oxide crystals and vacuums them
them up along with the dead skin. Diamond-tip microdermabrasion is newer and is just what it sounds
like. An esthetician passes a diamond tipped wand over your skin. This diamond tip sands off your outer layers
of skin and has suction to vacuum it all up.
WHO CAN BENEFIT FROM MICRODERMABRASION?
If you want instantly fresher, younger looking skin then microderm can help you. In particular, it can be useful for:
- reducing fine lines and minor wrinkles
- increased penetration of moisturizers and other skin care products
- improving uneven skin tone
- reducing dark spots
- improving melasma
- softening skin

Microdermabrasion is a physical method for removing the stratum corneum (the outermost layers of the epidermis, consisting of dead cells). This manual exfoliation of the skins surface takes away impurities with an instrument that combines a wand made of crystal or diamond particles and suction. Throughout a treatment crystal or diamond particles are sent from a container on the machine through a hose to a metal wand and then to the skin where the particles exfoliate the dead and are concurrently vacuumed with the same wand. Microdermasbrasion is like a sander and vaccum for your face.
Microdermabrasion is like a haircut for the skin,"sanding" off the dead skin. After one treatment the skin tone will be lighter and brighter and skin care products will be absorbed better. With regular treatments age spots, acne scars and melasma can be lightened. Over time the skin tone can be evened out and the texture improved.
"A mask blankets the skin, helping the active ingredients penetrate. Depending on the type of mask, it can draw impurities from the skin and eliminate dead cells, or tighten and tone." -Karen Asquith, trainer for G.M. Collins skincare products
Masks are left on 10-20 minutes and for best results under steam (so the pores are more open) during a facial.
CLAY MASKS; Draw out dirt, impurities and oil.
HYDRATING MASKS: Nourishing, soothing and very moisturizing.
ANTI-AGING MASKS: Reboots, firms and detoxes the skin.
TISSUE MASKS: A cocktail of skin beneficial ingredients in a concentrate form (serum) on thin fabric cloths.
Even when its cloudy there are sun rays. Places that tend to be overcast (like Oregon and Washington) tend to have the highest rate of skin cancer because people think they don't need to protect themselves from uva ( ultra violet a and b )and uvb rays on cloudy days. Here are some other facts to be aware of to protect yourself from sun damage and cancer.:
- Stick with sunscreens with 15-30 spf uva/uvb protection. (Higher numbers do not protect you in the sun any longer and have added unnecessary chemicals in them.)
-Avoid Ingredients: Oxybenzone, vitamin A (retinyl palmitate), added insect repelient.
-Avoid sprays and powders.
-Look for sunscreens with zinc oxide, titanium dioxide, and avobenzone or mexoryl. (Zinc oxide and titanium dioxide sit on top of the skin, forming a barrier against the sun's rays, they provide strong sun protection with few health concerns*, and they don't break down in the sun.)
-Look for cream, broad spectrum protection, water resistant, 30 spf for beach and pool. (Reapply after swimming or sweating.)
-Protect your lips, apply a lip balm or lipstick that contains sunscreen with spf 30 (yes, skin cancer can also form on the lips).
-Apply approximately 1 oz (the size of a shot glass) for full body coverage. (Most people only use 25-50% the recommended amount.)
-Some sunscreens recommend that meet all these recommendations: Poofy Organics (no nanoparticles) and Alba Botanica. (For full list go to ewg.org guide to sunscreens.)
*"On the balance of available evidence-the research suggesting sunscreen is beneficial in reducing the burden of skin cancer is very clear and convincing . The research suggesting harm from **nanoparticles in sunscreen is, at best, speculative." -cancer.org
**Nanoparticles ( the size a ingredient is broken into to formulate lotions with less white tint ) in American sunscreens are either titanium dioxide and zinc oxide.
-Pores are minute openings on the surface of the skin that hold oil producing sebaceous glands and bring dead skin up to the surface.
-Pores can NOT be opened and closed with steam or skin care products. Steam or products simply help loosen up oil and dirt that is inside making it easier to get out.
-Pore size is something you are born with, you can't change the size of your pores with products.
-You can reduce the appearance with regular cleansing, exfoliating and facials, keeping those pores clean is key!
-Picking at the skin can cause pores to loose its shape, causing it to look larger, so NO picking!
-As we age the skin looses collagen causing pores to look bigger. Facials help keep the skin as firm and healthy as possible.
-Wear sunscreen!!! Not only does it help prevent skin cancer but helps slow down the loss of collagen, therefor keeping pores as small looking as long as possible.
